The best stocking fillers for couples are small, playful and a little bit personal: a flirty voucher, a treat to share, a tiny game for two, a note only your partner would understand. Here are grown-up stocking filler ideas sorted by budget, from under £5 to about £40, plus homemade fillers and how to pack a stocking so it's fun to open.

A stocking is the warm-up act of Christmas morning. Nobody expects much from it, which is exactly why a thoughtful one lands so well. The ideas below are non-explicit and flirty at most, so your partner can open them on the sofa with the family in the next room.

What makes a good stocking filler for couples?

  • It's small but not throwaway. If it ends up in the bin by Boxing Day, swap it for something they'll use or eat.
  • It points to later. The best couples stocking fillers are invitations: a voucher for tonight, a card game for the 27th, a hot chocolate for the walk.
  • It has one in-joke. At least one item should only make sense to the two of you.
  • It mixes sizes. Something bulky in the toe, something soft in the middle, something light at the top. More on packing below.

Prices are rough UK guides for the type of thing, not any one brand.

Under £5

  • A clementine in the toe. The oldest stocking tradition there is. Write a tiny message on the peel in felt tip.
  • A single excellent truffle, wrapped in tissue, with "half each" on the tag.
  • A lip balm for the frosty walk you're going on later. Pop a note round it: "for the kiss at the top of the hill".
  • A packet of seeds for something you'll grow together in spring, like sunflowers or chillies.
  • Your first cinema ticket, if you kept it, slipped into a small frame or a new card holder.

Under £10

  • Fluffy bed socks in a colour they'd never choose for themselves.
  • A pocket card game for two. A plain deck with the rules to gin rummy or cribbage written inside the lid.
  • A mini bottle of their favourite spirit or a festive alcohol-free one, for a toast later.
  • A sachet of proper hot chocolate and a marshmallow tin, with "8pm, sofa, you and me" on the label.
  • A small notebook labelled "Things we said we'd do in 2027". Write the first three ideas in it yourself.
  • A massage bar or a small bottle of massage oil, with a homemade voucher for a ten-minute shoulder rub.

Under £20

  • A scented candle in a scent you both like, for the bedroom or the bath.
  • A conversation card deck for date nights. Or make your own from our questions to ask your partner.
  • A silk eye mask. For lie-ins, and for a blindfold taste test later in the week.
  • Good coffee beans or tea from an independent roaster, with a voucher for breakfast in bed.
  • A small photo print from this year, in a frame no bigger than a postcard.
  • A pair of tickets to a January comedy night or a film, folded into an envelope.

£20 to £40

  • A shared chocolate treat. Something you'll split together, not a box one of you eats alone. Our pick is below.
  • A small two-player puzzle or game that fits in a coat pocket for pub nights.
  • A leather or fabric keyring with the date you met stamped on it.
  • A good hand cream or bath oil with a promise to run the bath on the 27th.

Playful stocking fillers for your partner

Not sure where to start? Think about who they are on a lazy Sunday, then fill for that person.

The homebody

Bed socks, a candle, a hot chocolate sachet and a voucher for "one evening, sofa, no phones, your choice of film". Add the blanket they keep stealing from you, if it fits.

The foodie

A jar of a fancy chilli oil, a small bar of single-origin chocolate, a handwritten recipe for a dish you'll cook together, and a voucher for the washing up.

The planner

A slim 2027 diary with three dates already pencilled in, a pen they'll like, and a train ticket voucher for a day trip of their choosing.

The romantic

A letter, a pressed flower from somewhere you've been, a photo from this year, and a "kiss at midnight on New Year's Eve, wherever we are" voucher.

The competitive one

A pocket card game, a scorecard for the year ahead, and a "loser makes breakfast" rule written on the front. Our date night games for two has more ideas for keeping score.

If you're buying a bigger present too, our guides to romantic gifts for your boyfriend and romantic gifts for your girlfriend go further.

Homemade stocking fillers: ten vouchers to write

Vouchers are the cheapest and often the best-loved filler. Cut them from good card, roll them up with ribbon, and tuck them in between the bigger items. These ten are a good mix of sweet, useful and lightly flirty:

  1. Good for one lie-in. I'll bring the tea.
  2. Good for one film of your choice, no complaints from me.
  3. Good for a ten-minute shoulder rub, redeemable tonight.
  4. Good for one slow dance in the kitchen, any song.
  5. Good for one Sunday where I plan everything.
  6. Good for breakfast in bed, including the washing up.
  7. Good for one walk to anywhere you like, with a pub at the end.
  8. Good for winning one argument, no questions asked.
  9. Good for one evening with phones in a drawer.
  10. Good for one kiss under the mistletoe, wherever we hang it.

Add an expiry date to a couple of them, such as "valid until 31 January", so they actually get used.

Stocking fillers for couples to share

Some couples skip separate stockings and fill one together, or fill one for another couple as a gift. In that case, every item should be for two:

  • two mugs and one hot chocolate kit;
  • a deck of conversation cards;
  • a pair of tickets for a January date;
  • a chocolate treat to split;
  • a small game you can play in bed or at the pub;
  • an envelope marked "open on New Year's Eve" with a plan for the night.

It sits nicely next to a Christmas Eve box. Our guide to the Christmas Eve box for couples covers that tradition, and our Christmas gifts for couples covers the main presents.

Our pick for the top of the stocking

Snap'd is three individually wrapped milk chocolate hearts in a gift-ready box, made with Liboost®, a patented, clinically studied Damiana extract. It's £29.99, and it's designed to share: half a heart each, on a night in. Not recommended if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding, or for anyone under 18. If you take medication or have a medical condition, check with your GP or pharmacist first.

For Christmas delivery with Standard shipping, order by Friday 18 December. Delivery is free on UK orders from £49.

How to pack a stocking so it's fun to open

  1. Heavy in the toe. A clementine, a mini bottle or a jar goes in first so the stocking hangs properly.
  2. Soft in the middle. Socks, an eye mask or a scarf pad out the leg and hide the shapes of everything else.
  3. Small surprises between the layers. Rolled vouchers and handwritten notes slot in between the soft things.
  4. The best thing at the top. Whatever you're most excited about goes last, wrapped, peeking out of the cuff.
  5. Wrap a few, not all. Wrap three or four items so there's still some unwrapping, but don't wrap every single sock.
  6. End on a note. A short card at the very top, to be read last, saying why you love Christmas with them.
