A Christmas Eve box for couples is a small box you open together on 24 December, packed for one evening rather than the morning after. Fill it with four things: something cosy, a treat to share, something to play and a keepsake to hold on to. Then give the night a simple running order so it feels planned, not improvised.

Most Christmas Eve box ideas online are written for children: new pyjamas, a film, a mug for Santa's milk. This guide is for the two of you. It covers what to put in, what to spend, what to play and how to run the evening, plus a set of 20 prompt cards you can copy onto card at home.

What is a Christmas Eve box for couples?

It is the grown-up version of a family tradition. Instead of keeping children busy until bedtime, the box gives two people a reason to stop, sit down and spend the evening on each other.

The box does the asking for you. Nobody has to suggest "a proper night in" while the parcels are still unwrapped. You open the lid and the plan is already there.

It works whether you are hosting the whole family tomorrow or spending Christmas on your own as a couple. It is one evening, and it can be as simple or as generous as you like.

What to put in a Christmas Eve box for couples

Think in four categories. One or two items from each is plenty. A box that is too full turns into a pile of presents, and the evening gets lost.

Nude Stack'd game set with velvet blindfold, cards and stacking blocks

1. Cosy: something to change into

  • Matching or coordinating pyjamas, or one fluffy pair of socks each
  • A blanket big enough for two on the sofa
  • A candle in a scent you both like
  • A hot drink kit: good cocoa, a festive tea or the makings of a mulled drink
  • Two mugs, if yours are chipped

2. Treat: something to share

  • One excellent chocolate, rather than a tin of average ones
  • A cheese and cracker board for two
  • A bottle of something you have been saving, or a good alcohol-free alternative
  • Ingredients for one thing you will cook together, such as fondue or homemade pizza

Our pick for this slot is Snap'd, our milk chocolate hearts for couples. More on that below.

3. Play: something to do together

  • A card game or a two-player board game you have not played before
  • A deck of conversation prompts (copy ours, see below)
  • A film you have both said you will "get round to", with snacks already chosen
  • A small puzzle you can finish in one evening

4. Keepsake: something to keep

  • A handwritten letter about the year you have had together
  • A printed photo of a favourite moment from this year, in a small frame
  • A dated Christmas ornament you add to the tree each year
  • An envelope marked "open next Christmas Eve" for a note to your future selves
Category What it does for the evening Easy example
Cosy Signals that the night has started and the day is done Pyjamas and a candle
Treat Gives you something to share slowly, not graze on Snap'd chocolate hearts
Play Gives you something to do, so the evening has a shape Homemade prompt cards
Keepsake Makes the night worth remembering next year A letter about your year

Christmas Eve box ideas by budget

You do not need to spend much. The planning is the gift. Here is how a box comes together at three levels.

Budget Cosy Treat Play Keepsake
Under £20 Socks and a hot chocolate you make from scratch A bar of good chocolate, split Homemade prompt cards A handwritten letter
£20 to £50 A candle and a festive tea Snap'd (£29.99, three chocolate hearts) Homemade prompt cards A printed photo in a small frame
£50 and over Matching pyjamas and a big blanket Snap'd plus a cheese board for two A new two-player game, such as Nude Stack'd (Snap'd plus Nude Stack'd is £69.98, so UK delivery is free) A dated ornament and an "open next year" letter

A cheap box that is well planned beats an expensive box that is just stuff. If you are short on money or time, keep the letter and the prompt cards. They cost nothing and they carry the evening.

The treat: Snap'd chocolate hearts

Snap'd is three individually wrapped 17.5g milk chocolate hearts in a gift-ready box, made in small batches in the UK with Colombian milk chocolate. Each heart is made with Liboost® (an extract of the Damiana plant), plus zinc, vitamin B6 and selenium, all dosed on the label.

Box of Snap'd chocolate hearts opened on a wooden table

The serving on the pack is half a heart each. That makes it a natural fit for a Christmas Eve box: you break one heart between you, and two are left for the evenings after. It is something to share slowly, which is the whole point of the night.

Snap'd is £29.99 and in stock. It contains milk and soya and is suitable for vegetarians, not vegans. It is classified as a food supplement. Not recommended if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding, or for anyone under 18. If you take medication or have a medical condition, check with your GP or pharmacist first.

Add Snap'd to your Christmas Eve box. Order by Tuesday 15 December for Christmas delivery.

Christmas Eve couple games that need nothing but the two of you

The play slot does not have to cost anything. These work with a pen, a phone or nothing at all.

Red Nude Stack'd stacking blocks with symbols and a velvet bag
  • Christmas Eve questions. Take turns drawing a prompt card and answering it. The prompt cards below give you a starting set of 20.
  • Year in review. Each of you writes your top three moments of the year on slips of paper. Swap and guess which one the other person picked as number one.
  • Gift guess. Before anything is opened tomorrow, each of you writes down what you think the other has bought you. Seal it. Open the guesses on Boxing Day.
  • Two truths and a wish. Say two true things about your year and one wish for next year. The other person has to spot the wish.
  • Blind taste test. Line up a few chocolates or drinks. One of you closes their eyes and guesses. Then swap.

If you would rather have a game built for exactly this kind of evening, Nude Stack'd, our date-night stacking game for two, is designed to be played on a night in. It comes with 54 wooden blocks and 54 prompt cards, plays in anything from five minutes to two hours and costs £39.99.

How to run Christmas Eve as a couple: a simple running order

A box is better with a plan. This running order takes about three hours and works around a busy day. Move the times to suit you.

Snap'd chocolates on a bedside table under a warm lamp
  1. Phones away (7pm). Put them in another room or in the empty box lid. Wrapping and messaging can wait.
  2. Open the box and change (7.15pm). Pyjamas on, candle lit, blanket out. The cosy layer goes first so the night feels different straight away.
  3. Make something warm (7.30pm). Hot chocolate, mulled something or tea. Make it together, not one of you in the kitchen alone.
  4. Share the treat (8pm). Break a Snap'd heart between you, or open whatever treat you packed. Eat it slowly and talk.
  5. Play (8.15pm). Prompt cards or one of the games above. Aim for an hour, and stop while it is still fun.
  6. The keepsake (9.30pm). Read your letters to each other, or write the "open next Christmas Eve" note together.
  7. Lights low (10pm). No screens. Let the evening end on its own.

The order matters more than the timings. Cosy, then treat, then play, then keepsake. Each step gives you a reason to start the next one.

Christmas Eve prompt cards for couples

Copy these onto card, cut them out and fold them into a small envelope for your box.

The set has four suits, one for each part of the evening, with five prompts in each:

Suit When to draw Prompts
Look back With the hot drinks What moment from this year would you happily live again? When did I make you laugh the hardest this year? What is something we got through together this year? Which ordinary day this year turned out to be a good one? What is one thing I did this year that you never thanked me for?
Right now With the treat What is your favourite Christmas tradition from when you were small? What does a perfect Christmas Day look like to you, hour by hour? What is the best present you have ever been given? Which Christmas food could you happily skip? What is one thing about tonight you want to remember?
Play During the games Describe our first date in three words. Hum a Christmas song and see if I can name it in ten seconds. Do your best impression of a relative at Christmas dinner. Guess which present under the tree I am most excited about. Tell me your worst cracker joke.
Look ahead With the keepsake What is one thing you want us to try next year? Where should we be on Christmas Eve this time next year? What is one habit you want us to keep? Which friend do we need to see more of next year? What is one small promise we can make each other tonight?

Draw one card each, in turn. Either of you can pass on any card. That one rule keeps it light.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Christmas Eve box?

A Christmas Eve box is a small box of gifts opened on the evening of 24 December, before the main presents on Christmas Day. The tradition is mostly associated with children. A couples version swaps toys for things two people can share: something cosy, a treat, a game and a keepsake.

What do you put in a Christmas Eve box for couples?

Pack one or two items from each of four categories. Cosy (pyjamas, socks, a candle), treat (good chocolate, a hot drink kit), play (a card game or prompt cards) and keepsake (a letter or a printed photo). Keep it small enough that it shapes one evening rather than becoming a second Christmas.

How do I make a cheap Christmas Eve box for grown-ups?

Focus on the things that cost little and mean a lot. A handwritten letter, homemade hot chocolate, a pair of socks each and homemade prompt cards make a full box for under £20. Use a shoebox wrapped in brown paper and spend on one good treat if you can.

What games can couples play on Christmas Eve?

Easy Christmas Eve couple games include taking turns with question cards, guessing each other's top moment of the year, sealing written guesses about tomorrow's presents and a blindfold taste test. None of them needs special kit. If you want a ready-made date-night game, Nude Stack'd is our stacking game for two.

When should you give a Christmas Eve box?

Open it early in the evening on 24 December, once the day's jobs are done. Around 7pm is a good time to start. That leaves time for the full running order of cosy, treat, play and keepsake before bed, even if you have an early start on Christmas Day.

Is a pre-filled Christmas Eve box worth it?

A pre-filled box saves time but costs more and feels less personal. In our view, a box you build yourselves, with one bought treat and a few homemade touches, means more. If you are short on time, buy the treat and copy out the prompt cards. That covers half the box in minutes.

Start with the treat

The best Christmas Eve boxes are small, planned and shared. Pick something cosy, copy out the prompt cards, write the letter, and let the treat set the pace. Get Snap'd for your Christmas Eve box and keep two hearts for the quiet nights after. (Snap'd contains Damiana: see the note above.)
