The best anniversary wishes, and what to write in an anniversary card, come down to three things: one specific memory, one thing you love about them now, and one thing you're looking forward to. Below you'll find a simple formula, then original messages sorted by tone and by year: romantic, funny, short, first anniversary, milestone years, for a husband, for a wife, for your parents and wedding anniversary wishes for a couple from friends. Use the draw button to pick one at random.
What to write in an anniversary card: a simple formula

Most people freeze because they try to sum up the whole relationship in a card the size of a postcard. Don't. A good anniversary message is small and specific. Try these three lines, in this order:
- Look back. Name one moment from the past year, or from the beginning. "The night we got lost in Lisbon" beats "all our adventures".
- Look at them. Say one thing you love about who they are right now. A habit, a kindness, the way they laugh at their own jokes.
- Look ahead. End with something you're excited about: a trip, a plan, or simply "the next year with you".
Three sentences is plenty. If you only have room for one, use the look-back line. Specific memories land better than general compliments every time.
The messages below are written to be used as they are, or as a starting point. Swap in your own names, places and in-jokes and they'll sound like you.

Romantic anniversary card messages

For when you want to say the soft thing out loud. These work for any year and any couple.
- Every year I think I can't love you more, and every year you prove me wrong. Happy anniversary.
- Of all the rooms I've ever walked into, the best ones had you in them.
- You're still the first person I want to tell everything to. That hasn't changed, and I hope it never does.
- Thank you for choosing me on the easy days, and especially on the hard ones.
- I'd do it all again tomorrow. Same nerves, same answer.
- Home stopped being a place a while ago. Now it's wherever you've put the kettle on.
- I still get a small thrill when I hear your key in the door.
- Another year of being the luckiest person in every room. Happy anniversary, my love.
Funny anniversary card messages

Humour works best when it's affectionate and a little bit true. Add one soft line at the end so they know you mean it.
- Happy anniversary to the only person I'd share the last roast potato with. Most of the time.
- Another year of you pretending to like my cooking and me pretending not to notice. That's teamwork.
- Thanks for putting up with me. I know it's a full-time job and the pay is terrible.
- I love you more than I love being right. And you know how much I love being right.
- Here's to us: still together, still arguing about the thermostat.
- You stole my heart, my hoodies and most of the duvet. Happy anniversary, you thief.
- Enclosed: one free "you were right" token. Use it wisely. It will not be reissued.
- Of all the people I could annoy for the rest of my life, I'm so glad it's you.
Short anniversary card messages
For small cards, gift tags, flowers or a note on the pillow. Short doesn't mean thin if it's in your handwriting.
- Still you. Always you.
- Best decision I ever made.
- Here's to us, and to many more.
- You make ordinary days feel like occasions.
- Yours then, yours now, yours next year too.
- Happy anniversary to my favourite person.
- Same team, for life.
- Lucky me. Happy anniversary.
First anniversary card messages
Year one is the paper anniversary, which makes the card itself part of the gift. Write more than you normally would. Our 1st anniversary gift ideas have more on paper gifts.
- One year down, and I'm more sure now than I was on the day. Happy first anniversary.
- A year ago we made a promise. Thank you for keeping it every single day since.
- Our first year: one big day, a hundred cups of tea in bed and not one regret.
- They said the first year is the hardest. If this was hard, I can't wait for easy.
- Happy paper anniversary. This card is your present. Joking. Mostly.
- Twelve months married, and it still sounds brand new when I say it.
- Year one: you, me and the start of everything.
- Thank you for the best first year I could have asked for. Let's do fifty more.
Milestone anniversary card messages

For the big numbers. Name the year in the message; it makes even a simple line feel like an occasion.
- Five years. Half a decade of your laugh, your terrible puns and your hand in mine.
- Ten years ago I said yes. I'd say it again tonight, and louder.
- A decade in, and you're still my favourite plan for a Saturday night.
- Fifteen years of us, and it's still the best story I know.
- Twenty years, two of us and more good days than I could ever count. Thank you.
- Twenty-five years. Silver suits us, don't you think?
- Thirty years of you, and I'd still choose you first, every time.
- Forty years ago we had no idea what we were starting. Look at it now.
- Fifty golden years. Thank you for every single one of them.

Anniversary card messages for your husband
- To my husband: thank you for being my calm, my comedy and my home.
- You're my best friend, my favourite argument and the man I'd choose all over again.
- Every year you get a little greyer and I love you a little more. Coincidence? I think not.
- Thank you for the tea in the morning, the warm side of the bed and every way you show up for us.
- Happy anniversary to the man who still makes me laugh when I'm trying to be cross with him.
- I married a good man. I didn't realise I was marrying a great one.
- You're the best thing I ever said yes to.
Anniversary card messages for your wife
- To my wife: you make everything better, including me.
- I still can't believe you said yes. And no, you can't take it back.
- Happy anniversary to the woman who makes our house a home and every year a good one.
- Thank you for your patience, your kindness and your excellent taste in partners.
- You're the bravest, funniest, most beautiful person I know, and somehow you're mine.
- Every good thing in my life got better the day you arrived.
- Still the first face I look for in any room.
Wedding anniversary wishes for a couple, from friends
For parents, siblings, friends and colleagues. Warm and light is the safest note; save the in-jokes for people who'll get them.
- Happy anniversary to two people who make love look easy. We know it isn't, which makes it even better.
- To our favourite couple: thank you for proving the good ones exist.
- Here's to you both, and to many more years of being the couple everyone else quietly wants to be.
- Happy anniversary! Thank you for the dinners, the laughs and the hope you give the rest of us.
- Another year of you two. The world is better for it, and so are our weekends.
- Congratulations on another year of putting up with each other. We're very proud.
- Wishing you a wonderful anniversary and a night off from everyone, including us.
Anniversary wishes for your parents
Writing to Mum and Dad, or to the couple who raised you? Thank them for the example, not just the years.
- Happy anniversary to the two people who showed me what love looks like on an ordinary Tuesday.
- Thank you for every school run, every kitchen-table pep talk and every time you still hold hands. Happy anniversary.
- You make it look easy, which is how we know it isn't. Happy anniversary, Mum and Dad.
- Here's to all your years together, and to the jokes you still laugh at after all this time.
- Everything I know about kindness I learned watching you look after each other. Happy anniversary.
- Happy anniversary to my favourite double act.
- However many years it's been, you still save each other the last biscuit. That's love.
- Thank you for building a home we always want to come back to. Happy anniversary to you both.
How to sign off an anniversary card
The last line is the one they'll read twice. A few that beat "love from":
- All my love, today and every day.
- Yours, still.
- Forever your favourite.
- Here's to the next chapter.
- Your partner in everything.
- With love, and a reservation for Saturday.
That last one is a hint: a card lands even better when it comes with a plan. Write the plan inside, then keep it. Our date night ideas at home have plenty of evenings that cost very little, and our guide to anniversary gift ideas for couples covers experiences worth giving.
Anniversary card mistakes to avoid
- Only signing your name. A shop-bought verse plus "love, Sam" reads as a card bought in a hurry, even if it wasn't.
- Getting the year wrong. Check the date. Then check it again.
- Writing a speech. If it doesn't fit in the card, it's a letter. Letters are lovely, but give them separately.
- Jokes that need an audience. Anything you wouldn't say to their face at dinner doesn't belong in the card.
- Leaving it until the car park. Write it the night before, when you've got time to think of the memory.
Still stuck for the memory? A few of our questions to ask your partner are good at jogging it loose, and our flirty texts are perfect for the morning of the anniversary itself.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good anniversary wish?
Short, specific and warm: name one thing you love about the couple or the year they've had, then wish them more of it. For example: "Happy anniversary. Here's to more ordinary days that feel like this one."
What should I write in an anniversary card?
Write three short lines: one specific memory, one thing you love about your partner now, and one thing you're looking forward to together. Specific details, like a place or a moment, land better than general compliments.
What do you write in a short anniversary card?
One line is enough if it's sincere. Try "Still you. Always you.", "Best decision I ever made." or "You make ordinary days feel like occasions." Handwriting it makes even a short message feel personal.
What do you write in an anniversary card for a couple?
Keep it warm and light. Congratulate them, say what you admire about them as a couple and wish them many more years. For example: "To our favourite couple: thank you for proving the good ones exist."
What do you write in a first anniversary card?
Look back on the first year with one specific memory, then look ahead. The first anniversary is the paper anniversary, so a longer handwritten message can be part of the gift itself.
Is it OK to write something funny in an anniversary card?
Yes, if it's affectionate and you know your partner will enjoy it. Keep the joke kind, and add one sincere line at the end, such as "Happy anniversary, I love you", so the card doesn't read as only a joke.
