Wedding anniversary years each have a traditional name and gift, taken from a list of materials that starts with paper in your first year, moves through cotton, leather and wood, and builds to silver at 25, ruby at 40 and gold at 50. Below is the full UK list for years 1 to 15 and every fifth milestone to 60, with the modern alternatives alongside, and short notes on what each year actually means and how to give it.

Wedding anniversary years and gifts: the full UK list

The traditional column is the list most people in Britain mean when they say "it's the paper one" or "it's our ruby". The modern column grew up later, mostly in the US, and you will see it far more on American gift sites than British ones. Use whichever gives you the better idea. Nobody is checking.

Where the UK and US lists differ

The lists agree far more than they disagree, but not everywhere. If you have seen a different answer elsewhere, this is probably why:

  • 1st and 2nd: almost every current UK list gives paper first and cotton second, the same as the US. A few older British lists swap them, putting cotton first. Paper first is the safe bet.
  • 4th: the UK gives linen or silk. The traditional US list gives fruit and flowers.
  • 6th: the UK gives sugar. The traditional US list gives iron.
  • 7th: both lists give wool, and US lists often add copper.
  • 8th: both give bronze. Some older UK lists add salt.
  • 9th: pottery on most lists, but some older UK lists give copper instead.
  • Modern column: this is essentially a US invention. Plenty of British couples have never heard of a "clock anniversary", so if you give a clock for your first, add a note explaining it.

What the anniversary names mean

The old idea behind the list is simple: the materials get stronger and rarer as the marriage does. You don't have to believe it to enjoy it, but it gives every year a theme to play with.

  • Paper (1st): a blank page and something fragile, made to be written on together.
  • Cotton and leather (2nd and 3rd): everyday materials that get softer and tougher with use.
  • Wood (5th): roots. The first year that is meant to feel properly settled.
  • Tin and steel (10th and 11th): things that bend without breaking, after a decade of real life.
  • Crystal and china (15th and 20th): clear, fine and kept for best, but still used.
  • Silver, pearl and ruby (25th, 30th and 40th): things that are made slowly or found rarely.
  • Gold and diamond (50th and 60th): the materials that last longest of all.

How to use the list without being boring about it

The materials work best as a creative brief, not a shopping list. A brief is useful because it narrows the field: "something paper" is much easier to start on than "something nice". But the gift that lands is almost never the most literal one.

  • Take the material sideways. Paper can be tickets, a letter or a map of where you met. Tin can be a tin of something you both love. Sugar can be a baking afternoon.
  • Make it about the year you have just had. The material is the wrapping. The content is the twelve months you lived through together.
  • Give time as well as a thing. An evening planned around the gift almost always outlasts the gift. Our anniversary gift ideas for couples go deeper on experience gifts and what to avoid.
  • Agree a budget early. Especially in the first few years, when one of you may be planning a weekend away and the other a card.

The early years: paper to linen (1st to 4th)

The first materials are soft, everyday and easily damaged. The usual reading is that a new marriage is real but still fragile, and gets tougher each year. It also means the early gifts can be cheap and clever rather than expensive.

1st anniversary: paper

Letters, books, tickets, prints and anything handwritten. Paper is the year to be sentimental, because you have just made a year's worth of new memories and they all fit on a page. Our 1st anniversary gift ideas are sorted by budget, for him, for her and for you both.

2nd anniversary: cotton

The year for comfort: bedding, a throw, a picnic blanket, a good shirt. Cotton gifts get used every day, which suits a second year that has usually settled into a routine. See our 2nd anniversary gift ideas.

3rd anniversary: leather

The first material that is meant to last and to age well, the way a good leather bag softens with use. Wallets, journals, a watch strap, a weekend bag. Our 3rd anniversary gift ideas have the full list.

4th anniversary: linen or silk

Fine linen napkins for a dinner you cook together, a linen shirt for a summer holiday, a silk eye mask or pillowcase. If you would rather follow the US list, fruit and flowers is easy: a fruit tree for the garden or a year of flowers from a local florist.

Five to fifteen: wood, tin and crystal

From year five the materials get harder and more permanent. These are the anniversaries that often fall in the busiest stretch of life, with work, homes and sometimes children, so a gift that buys you an evening together is worth a lot.

5th anniversary: wood

The first big milestone. Wood stands for roots and steady growth. Think an engraved chopping board, a tree you plant together, or a wooden game you actually play together. We make one, Nude Stack'd, a date-night stacking game with 54 wooden blocks and 54 prompt cards for two adults. Our wood anniversary gift ideas cover the 5th in full.

6th to 9th: sugar, wool, bronze and pottery

  • Sugar (6th): a box of proper sweets from a sweet shop you both remember, a cake from the bakery near your first flat, or a baking class for two.
  • Wool (7th): a wool blanket for the sofa, a hand-knitted scarf, or a weekend somewhere with a lot of sheep and a pub with a fire.
  • Bronze (8th): a small bronze sculpture or bookends from a local foundry or maker, or bronze-coloured candle holders for the table.
  • Pottery (9th): a pottery class for two, a pair of handmade mugs, or a serving dish for the meals you cook most.

10th anniversary: tin

Tin is meant to stand for a marriage that bends without breaking and keeps what matters safe. A tin of ten notes, one for each year, is the classic, and it works. Our 10th anniversary gift ideas have plenty more, including the diamond option on the modern list.

11th to 15th: steel, silk, lace, ivory and crystal

  • Steel (11th): a good chef's knife, a steel hip flask, or a pair of steel water bottles for the walks you keep meaning to take.
  • Silk and fine linen (12th): silk pyjamas, a silk scarf, or a linen tablecloth for the dinners you host.
  • Lace (13th): lace is the most dated material on the list. Lace-trimmed handkerchiefs or a framed piece of antique lace work. So does going lightly on it.
  • Ivory (14th): never give real ivory. The UK's Ivory Act 2018 bans almost all dealing in it. Give the colour instead: ivory bedding, stationery or a cream cashmere jumper. Or use the modern gift, gold jewellery.
  • Crystal (15th): a pair of crystal wine glasses or a decanter, and a good bottle to christen them with.

The big milestones: china to diamond (20th to 60th)

After fifteen the list moves in fives, and the materials become the names people use for the occasion: the silver wedding, the ruby, the golden. These are often celebrated with family and friends as well as the two of you, so think about both a shared celebration and something private.

  • China (20th): a proper dinner service, or a single beautiful teapot. Some couples replace the wedding china they broke years ago.
  • Silver (25th): the silver wedding. Silver jewellery, a silver photo frame with your wedding picture, or a party in the same place you held the reception.
  • Pearl (30th): pearl earrings or cufflinks. Pearls grow slowly in layers, which is a nice line for the card.
  • Coral (35th): many corals are protected, so give the colour or the setting rather than the material: coral-coloured flowers, or a trip somewhere with a reef you can see.
  • Ruby (40th): ruby jewellery, a bottle of ruby port to open together, or four red roses, one for each decade.
  • Sapphire (45th): a sapphire ring or pendant, or a trip to the sea, as blue as you can find.
  • Gold (50th): the golden wedding. Gold jewellery, gold-framed photos from every decade, or a family gathering. In the UK you can also apply for a congratulatory message from the King for a 60th, 65th or 70th anniversary.
  • Emerald (55th): emerald jewellery, or something green and growing: a tree planted in their name.
  • Diamond (60th): the diamond wedding. Diamonds if the budget allows, but more often a gathering of everyone the marriage has made.

Whatever the year, plan the evening too

The materials list is about the gift. The part that tends to be remembered is the night itself. Even a small plan turns a present into an occasion:

  1. Protect the date. Book the babysitter, move the work call, put it in both diaries.
  2. Cook or order something with a story. The meal from your first date, your honeymoon or your first holiday.
  3. Open the gift after dinner, not before. It gives the evening a shape.
  4. Write the card properly. Our guide to what to write in an anniversary card has wording for every stage.
  5. Do something together afterwards. A walk, a game, a few good questions. Our date night ideas at home have plenty of ways to fill the rest of the night.

Frequently asked questions

What are the wedding anniversary years called?

Each year is named after its traditional material: paper (1st), cotton (2nd), leather (3rd), linen (4th), wood (5th), sugar (6th), wool (7th), bronze (8th), pottery (9th), tin (10th), steel (11th), silk (12th), lace (13th), ivory (14th), crystal (15th), china (20th), silver (25th), pearl (30th), coral (35th), ruby (40th), sapphire (45th), gold (50th), emerald (55th) and diamond (60th).

What are the traditional anniversary gifts by year in the UK?

Paper (1st), cotton (2nd), leather (3rd), linen or silk (4th), wood (5th), sugar (6th), wool (7th), bronze (8th), pottery (9th), tin (10th), steel (11th), silk and fine linen (12th), lace (13th), ivory (14th), crystal (15th), china (20th), silver (25th), pearl (30th), coral (35th), ruby (40th), sapphire (45th), gold (50th), emerald (55th) and diamond (60th).

Is the first anniversary paper or cotton in the UK?

Paper, on almost every current UK list, with cotton for the second. A few older British lists swap them, which is why you sometimes see cotton first. If in doubt, go with paper.

What is the difference between traditional and modern anniversary gifts?

The traditional list uses materials such as paper, wood, tin and silver. The modern list, which is mostly used in the US, swaps many of these for objects such as clocks, appliances, watches and jewellery. From the 25th anniversary the two lists mostly agree.

Which anniversaries are the most important?

In the UK the big ones are usually the 1st, 5th (wood), 10th (tin), 25th (silver), 40th (ruby), 50th (gold) and 60th (diamond). The 60th, 65th and 70th can also bring a congratulatory message from the King if you apply.

Do you have to follow the anniversary materials list?

No. It is a tradition, not a rule. Most couples use it as a starting point for ideas, and the best gifts usually take the material loosely and make it about your year together.
