How to ask your girlfriend questions without it feeling like a quiz

The questions are the easy part. What makes them land is what you do with the answer.

  • Follow up before you move on. "What happened then?", "How did you feel about that?" and "Do you still think that?" keep her talking far better than a new question.
  • Remember, then come back to it. If she mentions a friend's wedding, a work deadline or a worry, ask about it again next week. That's the bit people notice.
  • Don't fix, listen. If an answer touches something hard, resist the urge to solve it. Ask whether she wants advice or just wants you to hear it.
  • Swap answers. Answer every question yourself as well. It turns a list into a conversation.
  • Pick the setting. Light questions over a takeaway, the deeper ones on a walk or in bed with the lights low.
  • Let her skip. Any question can be passed. Saying so up front makes people more willing to answer, not less.

If you'd like the questions to come with a bit of structure, try one of our date night games for two, our truth or dare for couples, or Nude Stack'd, our stacking game where each block sends you to a card and either of you can skip any card. And if she's far away right now, our questions to ask in a long distance relationship are written for calls and texts.

Frequently asked questions

What are good questions to ask your girlfriend?

The best ones show you've been listening: ask about her friends, her work and the plans she's mentioned, then follow up. Good starters include "Which friend do you feel most yourself around?", "What are you working towards that few people know about?" and "What's a family in-joke only your lot understand?"

What are deep questions to ask your girlfriend?

Deep questions ask what shaped her. Try "Which woman in your life taught you the most?", "When do you feel safest?" or "What do you need to hear when you doubt yourself?" Ask one at a time on a calm evening, listen for longer than feels natural and share your own answer too.

What are cute questions to ask your girlfriend?

Short, warm ones such as "Which song would go on a playlist called 'us'?", "What's your favourite way to be woken up?" or "Which of my jumpers have you secretly claimed?" They work well over text or on a lazy morning.

How many questions should I ask on a date?

Fewer than you think. Two or three good questions with proper follow-ups make a better evening than ten in a row. If one turns into a long conversation, let it, and save the rest for another night.
