Can't decide what to do tonight? This date night idea generator picks one for you. Choose at home or out, a budget (free, £ or ££) and an energy level (cosy, playful or adventurous), then press the button for a specific idea. All 67 ideas are written out below, so you can also just scroll and choose.
Every idea is something real you can do in the UK this week, not "have a date night". And if you're arguing about which one to do, let the button decide. That's half the point.

Set your filters, then press "Give us an idea".
What the budgets mean: free means nothing beyond what's already in the cupboard, £ is roughly up to £30 for the two of you, and ££ is more than that. Prices vary a lot around the UK, so treat them as a guide.

At home and playful

How to turn an idea into a proper date night

An idea is only half a date. The other half is how you treat the evening.
- Decide fast. Agree in advance that the first idea the generator gives you is the one, or allow one re-roll each. Endless scrolling is how date night turns into another night on the sofa.
- Put it in the diary. A date that's written down happens. "Sometime this week" doesn't.
- Phones away for the first hour. In a drawer, in another room, face down at the very least.
- Take turns planning. One of you picks this week, the other next week. It halves the effort and doubles the surprise.
- Keep a list of the winners. When an idea is a hit, make it a regular. Write the bigger ones on a list on the fridge so they don't get forgotten.
If money's tight this month, filter by "Free": there are more than twenty, and our cheap date night ideas has more for under £10. If it's pouring down, stick to the at-home lists. With children in the house, try the at-home cosy list and our date night ideas for parents. And if you've been together a long time and want something with more meaning, see our romantic date night ideas for long-term couples.
Frequently asked questions
How does the date night idea generator work?
Choose where (at home or out), a budget (free, £ or ££) and a mood (cosy, playful or adventurous), then press the button. It picks at random from the ideas on this page that match, and won't repeat one until you've seen them all.
What is a good date night idea for tonight?
If you have no plans and no budget, try a candlelit picnic on the living room floor, a blanket fort film night or a sunset walk with a flask. All three take minutes to set up.
What are free date night ideas?
Reading to each other, a memory lane quiz, a living room camp-out, a sunset walk, a free museum, stargazing and a sunrise hike are all free. Set the budget filter to "Free" to see them all.
How often should couples have a date night?
There's no rule, but a regular rhythm helps more than an occasional big night. Many couples aim for one planned date night a week or a fortnight, at home or out.
